1998 Geek Awards

For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, this was a tradition started by Kelvin Lawrence the 2nd year of ColoradOS/2 in Cheyenne, and I've been doing it for the last several years at the annual Friday night pizza party, with some help from Aidon typically. The first year Kelvin actually collected fees from all the 'winners' to help buy the next round of drinks - now it's an honorary award, with nothing gained nor lost, besides a bit of embarrassment and laughter.

Anyway - here they are! If they aren't funny to you, bummer - you should have been at the party - they were hilarious then < grins>
Paul Giangarra For carrying on in German at the party - and in addition, because of where he happened to be standing at the time the awards were given, for "coming out of the closet."
David Moskowitz the hardware award, for requiring Wayne to come in and press the power button on the projector.
Noel Bergman for bring the big-gun camera to the party.
Evan Bergman for wanting to come up with his own geek award.
Russell For arriving with a Linux machine, screwing it up at the conference, and being entirely confident that he could find another Linux user to give him a fix-it disk - and being right. He also won the ignorance award for being at the conference for the past several years and yet still not knowing who (or what) the geekstress was (sheesh!)
Dionne for blow-drying his laptop.
Kelvin for getting lost in the woods on his way back to his condo.
Bryan Z for being assimilated into the group so quickly (first-timer, and you'd never know it by Tuesday!)
Mark and Jeroen for setting up a wireless LAN with their laptops within hours of arrival, and furthermore bringing a so-connected laptop to the party next door - and being connected through the walls.
Paul van Keep for planning his next child's conception and birth such that it didn't interfere with his conference attendance.
Mike Bowler for trying to use a token ring card on an ethernet.
Matt Osborn for finally getting to the top of the hill (are you CRAZY Matt?)
Mike Cowlishaw for putting his drink on the fireplace mantle at Joe's party, letting go, and watching it promptly slide right off and onto the loor.
Chris Farnham for spending Friday afternoon watching "The Boy in the Bubble" (John Travolta - remember it?) while reading about RMI.
And the be-all, end-all geek award goes to:
Bob Mahoney who without any lookup or preparation just tried out: www.javaslut.com (and no - it didn't work - but don't be surprised if it does by the end of the week!)
